About BOLT HOLE ART

“We first spotted Bolt Hole Art as we scouted around a local home and gift fair. Even from across the room we were struck by the stark and dramatic contrast, of both the subject matter and the materials used. Talking to the creator of this fine art, we soon discovered that Naomi Mumford is genuinely passionate about her art - a passion that’s reflected in the work she produces. In fact, one of her pieces now hangs above Emma’s mantlepiece, she simply couldn’t resist!” Emma & Cath, Swanky Maison

Sculptor, Naomi Mumford, has been passionate about art all her life having grown up in the countryside; she finds solace and draws inspiration from nature. It’s the trees, landscapes, light and shade she sees all around her country bolt hole that motivates the creation of her dramatic slate artwork.

Originally from near Cambridge, Naomi left the country and pursued an education at Wimbledon School of Art. Graduating with a degree in Fine Art specialising in Sculpture, Naomi continued to live and work in London within the art world, until she later returned with husband James to East Anglia to be near family when her first nephew was born.

It was the move to Bolt Hole Cottage in Suffolk, that rejuvenated Naomi’s motivation for her own art and, living here, her creativity was able to flow once again. In January 2003, when she was forced to spend months convalescing at home, and on a bleak winter’s day, Naomi found herself looking out at a leafless tree framed by the window of her cottage. It was this tree that would mirror her recovery, as winter turned to spring, and it was this tree that first inspired the wall art she creates today.

Naomi has developed a unique art form, sketching the tree in three dimensions, using slate and plaster; chosen not only for their material characteristics but also for their stark tonal contrast, and the strong definition she is able to create by using the two together.

Naomi uses reclaimed slate roof tiles and green Cumbrian slate, sourced by Honister Slate Mine, to create stunning sculpted wall art that can be hung on the wall, stood on a shelf or mantelpiece and once treated can even be hung as a feature in the garden.
