Handmade jewellery designer-maker, Gill Oglesby, graduated from the University of Leeds in the summer of 1999, achieving a first class degree in Mathematics and going on to forge a successful career as a Software Developer working on a financial trading system for International Trading Banks.

Gill has always had a technically creative talent and began making jewellery at the start of 2007. Having recently become engaged, and wanting to add a personal touch to her wedding, Gill had an idea to attempt to create both the wedding stationery and jewellery for the bridal party.

Both her creative endeavours proved to be a great success but it was the jewellery making which captivated her most and since then Gill has continued to learn new techniques and experiment with different styles. Gill has mainly learnt jewellery making through books but she also attended a course on wire wrapping in the Spring of 2007.

Although very successful in her career, Gill always had a dream of turning her passion for handmade jewellery into a business but, as many of us find, the time never seemed right. In December 2008, Gill took a break from work and hobbies (and sleep!) to have her first child. So jewellery making had to take a back seat as she got to grips with the new responsibilities of being a mother.

In October 2009, realising she needed to return to work to provide for her family but craving a different sort of life and more time with her son, Gill decided that if her dreams of running a jewellery business were ever going to come true then she needed to make a serious start – and this is exactly what she has done! Gill now combines part time work with caring for her son and running her own handmade jewellery business.

Over the last few years Gill’s jewellery designs have evolved as she masters new skills and experimented with different techniques and materials. Gill’s current designs use wire wrapping techniques to combine Sterling Silver chain with semi-precious gemstone beads and freshwater pearls. For Gill, attention to detail is key and putting care and attention into each piece allows her to create consistently high quality handmade jewellery.

Gill’s philosophy is to design and create jewellery ranges to complement a special outfit. As such her designs are available in a range of colours, through the use of different gemstones, to offer a greater choice, allowing customers to coordinate their jewellery with their clothing. Some semi-precious gemstones are only available in limited numbers and so the colour variations available will change over time, but this just adds to their uniqueness.

Gill plans to regularly introduce new ranges as well as adding further gemstone options to existing popular ranges. All jewellery is made to order which allows her to make adjustments easily, e.g. the length, should a customer have specific requirements. In addition if a customer would like a different gemstone in an existing design then I am happy to add to the available variations if the gemstones can be sourced. To complete the package, each item of jewellery comes in its own individual box and is delivered free, making them the perfect special gift.
