Founder of HeartBox, Leanne Wood, worked as a jewellery designer and craftsperson for over eight years, specialising in bridal jewellery commissions and everyday pieces. Initially she worked from home but as demand for her work increased she moved to a studio and opened her own shop in Exeter.

In 2008, Leanne decided to take a break from her career, following the birth of her son, Stanley (we love this name!). She took a much needed two year break from jewellery design to concentrate on her family.

As a new mum, Leanne was inundated with gifts, the majority of which were clothes which her baby all to quickly grew out of. So when it came to buying for other mums and babies, Leanne tried to look for more lasting and personal alternatives but the choice was very limited. This gap in the market inspired Leanne to develop her own range of gifts and in 2010 her new business, Heartbox, was launched.

Leannes initial designs were based around a lot of her jewellery, such as the silver lattice hearts, combing fashion with art, and they have since evolved to use a variety of mediums from wool, felts, buttons, aluminium, wood and paper.

HeartBox products differ from those others on the market. Not only are they personalised to make an ideal keepsake gift, they are also beautiful pieces of artwork in their own right, designed to be displayed and appreciated (not stored in drawers like many silver moneyboxes and often more ‘traditional’ gifts!). Most designs use the heart shape as its theme, the symbol of love, perfect as a gift to show someone you care.

The box frame designs are all lovingly handmade in stages, where by each heart has been handmade in a range of materials, before being assembled by foam mounting onto individual sections of card, before again being foam mounted onto a backdrop, which can consist of one or two layers of paper, card or fabric. Lastly tags can be added with personalised messages on them with details such as the wedding date, or new arrivals name, depending on the type of gift.
