About LAURA SARAWAN

We met Laura at the Harrogate Simply Christmas exhibition in December 2010 and immediately fell in love with her work. So we’re thrilled she agreed to showcase her handmade jewellery on Swanky Maison”. Emma & Cath, Swanky Maison.

Jewellery designer-maker, Laura Sarawan lives and works in Leeds, North Yorkshire. In 2007, Laura graduated from The Birmingham School of Jewellery with a BA (Hons) degree in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design and since then she has exhibited her collection at select shows and galleries throughout the UK.

Laura’s work is inspired by the words of Charles Dickens, specifically a small description in his book Great Expectations

“…I saw that everything within my view that ought to be white, had been white long ago, and had lost its lustre, and was faded yellow…” Great Expectations, Charles Dickens.

Using this imagery and seeing the beauty in decay, Laura has created a stunning collection of feminine, delicate and wearable pieces of handmade jewellery. Laura uses enamelled precious metal and white matt resin in individually made moulds to make each piece of jewellery unique and representative of impermanence.

The colour range is sensitive to her initial inspiration, looking at the discoloration of white. Her pieces explore the contrast of the bright, matt, white resin with the partially revealed enamelled surfaces, introducing a variety of understated colours.

Laura’s work is a constant exploration of colour and form, pushing boundaries through experimentation creating work that appears ephemeral, fragile and decaying yet still durable, beautiful and precious.
