About QUITE CONTRARY CRAFTS
Quite Contrary Crafts is run by artist, Mary Foley, and was founded in London in August 2009. Mary has since relocated to Lancashire, where she is originally from, but can still be found in London quite regularly.
With a background in Fine Arts, Mary has always been a very creative person, finding any excuse to make presents and cards for friends and family. Mary soon discovered her talent for creating hand cut cards and set about creating pieces that were a more and more intricate, exploring the delicate art of the Papercut and experimenting with layers and patterns. Soon her love of making these pieces turned into a business and, being called Mary, there was really only one name for it – and Quite Contrary was born!
Mary loves how, with some precise strokes, a plain canvas can be transformed into something delicate and eye-catching, brought alive by a medley of colours and shapes. Mary’s Rose Papercuts emerged, and she continually builds upon this idea, creating different shapes and patterns, and venturing into the idea of 3D Papercuts too.
Each Papercut is cut entirely by hand, with no marks made to the paper. They are then layered onto paper and mounted on a card backing, fitting perfectly into the wooden frames.
Also offering something a little different, Mary decided to use her most popular card design in creating a range of Mugs and Coasters – after all, we are a nation of Tea lovers! Her ceramic mugs are all screen printed to a very high standard, in lovely rich colours. The hardboard coasters are professionally printed with a high gloss finish to the teapot print.
The cards in the Quite Contrary collection are different to what you will find on the highstreet as Mary likes to create something designs that are unique, cheerful a little quirky, that will bring a smile to someone’s face or make someone’s day. Mary is thrilled to learn that recipients of her cards have often then framed them and she loves to know they’re hanging cherished on someone’s wall!
