About ROSANNA MARTIN
“We have to admit that Rosanna Martin is one of our favourites on Swanky Maison. We absolutely adore her exquisite, subtle yet impactful designs. If she hadn’t joined our site of her own free will, I think we might have hounded her until she submitted!” Emma & Cath, Swanky MaisonGraduating from Cardiff Art and Design, UWIC, in June 2008 with a BA (Hons) in Ceremic, Rosanna secured a much sort after place on the graduate scholarship scheme at Fireworks Clay Studios, also in Cardiff.
Having completed her education and developed strong skills, Rosanna moved back home to Cornwall to continue her chosen path and to establish herself as a professional maker.
Using the finest hand thrown porcelain, Rosanna creates beautiful cylinders that can be used as vases, pots or, quite simply, just appreciated for their visually striking and tactile qualities.
Inspired by the making process itself and her physical reactions and responses to it, Rosanna is interested in parts of the process that normally go disregarded, disposed of or smoothed over. Rather than manipulate her pieces to form a pre-conceived idea, Rosanna incorporates the actions involved in the making of art to create pieces of work that celebrate and bring to life these actions. For example, her most recent body of work explores the process of turning and how it can form an integral part of the decorative quality of the piece.
Having made these pieces, Rosanna then decorates them using either a black or turquoise glaze on the interior form. This sets up a strong contrast between the interior and exterior, which is then left as bare porcelain or decorated with a black clay slip. Using turning tools she then scratches back into the pieces, creating wonderful lines of movement, further developing the tactile contrast between interior and exterior.
The result of all Rosanna’s hard work and skill is a truly gorgeous collection of ceramics, perfect for the discerning homemaker.
