Artist and founder of Sia Art, Julie Bell has been passionate about art for over 20 years. She has been painting original artwork as a hobby since leaving school but it wasn’t until October 2007 that Julie took the plunge to leave her day job, working as a Market Research Strategist for HBOS, and become a full time professional artist.

This had been a dream of Julie’s for years but the catalyst for such a change in direction didn’t occur until she exhibited some of her work at the Arts Theatre in the West End of London. Julie’s paintings were for sale in the foyer and it proved to be a huge success, with around half her pieces sold. Julie’s exhibition became the most successful show the theatre had ever had to date. It was at this point that Julie believed that there could be life for her outside of banking, and it gave her the confidence and inspiration she needed to hand in her notice and start living the dream.

Julie’s dream is to make original, unique and contemporary artwork available and accessible to as wide an audience as possible. Aware that galleries can often be intimidating places, Julie likes to spread where she exhibits her work, which can be found on show in galleries, art exhibitions, craft fairs, trade shows, business premises, coffee shops and now on Swanky Maison.

Working from her painting studio in Utley, near Keighley in West Yorkshire, Julie works in acrylic on boxed canvas, sometimes texturing her work, sometimes not. Julie loves to focus on the light in her paintings to really bring them to life and, more often than not, she’ll use a palette knife to finish each painting adding great movement.

Her love of the Abstract Expressionism period is evident in her work, as she too captures the freedom of expression created by these artists. Julie is fascinated by how nature and objects deteriorate over time, be it from the effects of the elements or simply from age, and is drawn to the muted colours and texture this creates. Julie also likes to paint flowers and skies in a simple, contemporary style, yet represented realistically. Her work sometimes also uses words, colour and texture together to create truly individual and personal originals

Keen to encourage people to appreciate owning original artwork and the joy it can bring over mass produced work, Julie endeavours to keep her artwork affordable whilst still maintaining the high standard and quality of work. Delivering a painting that exceeds your expectations is her joy and the part that makes all the time and effort she puts into her pieces worthwhile.
