"We love the bright contemporary designs in Joanne's collection, every piece is so beautifully made and tactile, it makes you want to pick it up and feel the smooth gorgeousness of it!" Emma & Cath, Swanky Maison
Callula Glass is the brand of British designer-maker, Joanne Taylor. Working from her studio in rural Cheshire, Joanne has developed a collection of geometrically inspired, decorative and functional glass pieces for the contemporary home. Bold colour palettes form themed colour-ways which are regularly refreshed to reflect key seasonal styles.
Joanne has worked with many creative media, including metalwork and photography, but it was glass which really captured her imagination. She is endlessly fascinated with glass as a medium; the alchemy involved, its interplay with light, the tactile nature of a finished piece and the element of surprise when the kiln is opened after many hours of heating and cooling make working with glass incredibly exciting.
Joanne is influenced by modern interior and graphic design, as well as historical design movements, particularly the linear style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the grid formations of the De Stijl movement. Inspiration is also taken from the intricate details which make up a familiar object; something that you may only notice by zooming in close.
Joanne prides herself on the high quality finish of her work which she achieves with fastidious planning of each part of the process. Designs begin life as a series of sketches followed by mood boards of colour schemes, before the glass is cut and shaped by hand, cleaned, and assembled in the kiln ready for a series of fusing and slumping programmes. Callula is a Latin name, meaning 'little beauty' which is the pre-requisite for each design.
